It grows tiresome to constantly read the line "fund proxy wars" as a stand-in for what has much more often stood as beneficial Foreign Aid since the founding of the Marshall Plan. It's lazy and feels meant to gin up an automatic bias.

Definitely let's debate the pro/con of funding but at the same time you could just as easily bring up the fact that we spend as much or more on the yearly US military budget but it seems ironclad.

Great article - my view is that we are back in 1992 again, but with the burden of debt! At same time I agree it is possible for US and the West to innovate their way out of this mess.
