To investors, Today I am announcing that I have led a $5 million Series A investment in Synthesis, which is the education spin-out from the school that Elon Musk custom built for his own children. If you remember, I previously led the seed round of the company about two and a half months ago. Here is what I wrote about the business at the time:
Fantastic. As a former elementary educator, I could not be more excited about bringing huge changes to how children are educated. I've long thought self-determination theory needs to be front and center for the motivation of both children and teachers. To me, that is the central piece. Bottom-up, and bring back a greater diversity of what is taught. Common core has benefits, but huge drawbacks as well, narrowing and strapping us to a small set of skills, with testing to measure what? All kinds of minds need all kinds of approaches and choice.
